Below are links (in no particular order) to highly recommended websites I have visited, specialising in World War 1 / European Battlefields.

A superb website created by amateur historian and photographer Pierre 'Grande-Guerre' based in Amsterdam. The author has travelled extensively along the Western Front, visiting many places 'off the beaten track' which is what I particularly like about it.

The author concentrates on the visual aspects of the Front and his photographs are excellent. There are regular updates and the opportunity to join a Great War Forum.

2. Paul Reed's Battlefields of World War 2

World War 2 battlefield expert Paul Reed's long established website, covering many of the main theatres of war such as Normandy, Arnhem, the Ardennes and the Italian Front.

The site provides a wealth of information on visiting the battlefields, as well as a research service, book reviews and wargaming. Just about everything WW2-related in fact!

3. Martin Galle's 'Omaha Beach' Website

Despite the title, this award-winning

website focuses not just on the Normandy Battlefields but a wide range of others including Maginot Line, First World War and Franco-Prussian War.

Based in Germany, Martin is something of a battlefield expert and even offers his own guided tours on request.

4. Battlefield Podtours

Battlefield guide Jon Halperin's website details his innovative mp3 audio tours which will cater particularly for the casual visitor to the Western Front and Normandy.

An original way to enjoy a self-guided tour of the battlefields 'hands free!' and at your own pace.

5. Monte Cassino Tours

A webite offering specialist battlefield tours of Monte Cassino and Anzio for small groups or individuals by a licenced local tour guide.

Also, a very nicely set out website with great pictures and information.

6. Frontline Tours

Website of tour guide Lionel Roosemont with details of his highly-recommended tours around the Ypres Salient, including visits to Passchendaele and Messines.
